Libyan Cuisine Is Very Much Influenced By Italian Dishes
Libya was colonized by Italy for decades (roughly from 1911-1940s ). So a lot of the Libyan dishes especially in Tripoli ( Libya’s capital), is very much influenced by Italian dishes. So think pasta, decadent desserts and various seafood dishes are just a few popular dishes that are offered in many of the restaurants across Libyan cities. One thing Libyan people know how to do really well is open some incredible cafes with Italian inspired ambiance and great restaurants with spectacular food!
Blend of Shrimp, Little Clams, Scallops and Mussels
Seafood is something that I grew up enjoying in various dishes. My mom always made many traditional Libyan dishes with seafood. Like couscous with fish, Harimi (fish stew) and Libyan Shorba ( soup) with salmon. I get my love for cooking from my mom – she is incredible! Growing up, I always admired how despite a long day at work, she still managed to head into the kitchen and whip up an amazing home cooked meal. This spicy seafood sauce is a dish she made all the time. It is a great base for pastas, a stew and even a soup ( add additional water or veggie stock to thin it out).
Seafood Medley Tossed Together in a Rich Spicy Tomato Sauce
This Spicy Seafood Tagliatelle pasta is easy to make and something you really can whip up together after a long day at work. Also, it is a great way to switch up your basic pasta dishes you usually make! You can make this dish with Tagliatelle, Pappardelle or Linguine pastas. I used a seafood medley I picked up from whole foods and is made up of shrimp, clams, mussels and scallops. I also added additional fresh shrimp and little clams to the dish as well! Of course, alter the recipe according to what you prefer. If you are not a fan of clams, feel free to omit it and just add some cubbed fresh salmon or halibut.
I hope you give this delicious pasta dish a try! Recipe is below!

- In a large pot on medium heat, add olive oil, garlic and onions and stir for two minutes.
- Add the Calabrian, tomato paste and stir for about one minute.
- Then add the celery and carrots and stir well. You do not have to add these veggies I just wanted to add some veggies to the sauce.
- Add the tomato puree, Mezzetta tomato Sauce, water and stir. Allow everything to cook together for about 10 minutes.
- Cook the pasta 2 minutes less than the suggested time on the box/bag instructions because the pasta will further cook in the sauce for the last 2 minutes.
- Add the seafood medley and washed little clams into the sauce and cover the sauce pan and cook for about 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes check on the sauce and stir. Cook for an additional 3 minutes or until all the clams have opened. Note: Discard any clams after the 3 minutes that have not opened because that means they were already dead.
- Taste the sauce and add any additional seasonings or herbs.
- Add the pasta to the sauce and stir and allow the pasta to cook for another 1 -2 minutes.
- Pour yourself a plate of this delicious Spicy Seafood Tagliatelle Pasta! Top with fresh chopped parsley, drizzle of chili or olive oil and a side of baguette! Enjoy!
